What is the history of lavender?
Ah lavender … It’s so delicate, so fragrant! We love it! But sometimes we’re far from suspecting the richness of its history.
Indeed, this ancient plant would find its origins in the Mediterranean, more precisely in the Persian basin, where it is mentioned from the 1st century.
Although the word "lavender" as we know it appears in the Middle Ages, the plant has actually been used for several centuries: the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans already used it to perfume their baths and linens. Subsequently, lavender was quickly used to make perfumes, but also remedies and medicines! And, yes, this little flowering plant is not only very pretty, it is also very useful.
Lavender is part of the Labiatae family and there are several different species. We therefore speak of several lavenders, and all are part of the genus Lavandula. However, in France, we only find three species: maritime lavender, fine lavender or true lavender, and finally, spike lavender.
